In honor of Prof. Wook Hyun Kwon’s contribution to system science and control engineering, the Engineering Research Center for Advanced Control and Instrumentation organizes Wook Hyun Kwon Lecture every year. This event consists of an invited talk by a celebrated researcher who has contributed to the field, and a satellite workshop or colloquium with a banquet. This event is supported by the raised fund from Prof. Kwon’s former students and his family.
This lecture series was initiated in 2016, on the occasion of 70th anniversary of Seoul National University. The invited speakers are listed as follows.
- Prof. Thomas Kailath from Stanford University (2016)
- Prof. Alberto Isidori from University of Rome (2017)
- Prof. Stephen Boyd from Stanford University (2018)
- Prof. Manfred Morari from University of Pennsylvania (2019)
- Prof. Brian Anderson from Australian National University (2022)
- Prof. Tamer Basar from University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (2023)

Inaugural Congratulatory Address

Sept 23, 2016
Good afternoon, distinguished participants and guests, Prof. Wook Hyun Kwon, and Prof. Thomas Kailath,
I am indeed honored to be here today, and on behalf of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering of Seoul National University, I would like to extend a whole-hearted welcome to all participants and congratulate this launching of Wook Hyun Kwon Lecture series.
Dr. Kwon, Professor Emeritus of Seoul National University, has been our model, like a shining light. He has encouraged his students to make startup companies, even much earlier than startup booming in Korea. His former students made more than 10 companies, among which we can find many very successful companies today such as Humax and Suprema.
Academically, it is amazing that his paper published in 2001 in International Journal of Control is the most highly cited paper among all papers published from our department up to date.
More than that, Prof. Kwon has served as a President of the International Federation of Automatic Control. He was the first professor in the history of our department who served as a president of international society.
Therefore, in that sense, Wook Hyun Kwon Lecture series has a very special meaning for us. And it is our great pleasure and honor to have, as the first invited distinguished lecturer, Dr. Thomas Kailath, Hitachi America Professor of Engineering, Emeritus, Stanford University.
I believe that Prof. Kwon will introduce Prof. Kailath, but, in fact, he does not need any introduction. Most of us know his worldly-used textbooks of Linear Systems and Linear Estimation.
Today’s lecture has also a very special meaning. Our department as well as Seoul National University has 70 years of history. This occasion is also prepared as a Special Lecture, celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering of Seoul National University.
I would like to thank Prof. Kailath and Prof. Kwon and also appreciate all efforts of Prof. Hyungbo Shim and the Engineering Research Center for Advanced Control and Instrumentation for launching this lecture series and arranging this wonderful opportunity of learning from Prof. Kailath.
I sincerely hope all participants enjoy this very meaningful occasion. Thank you very much.
